"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
~Dr. Seuss~
WHAT ON EARTH IS SSR?!
What do you do when you want to get better at something? You practice! Silent Sustained Reading provides students with isolated time in class to "practice" reading. SSR is widely supported with the idea that reading "traditional text" has faded with the expansion of technology and we must work to keep it alive. Not only are the bulk of formal assessments written in a traditional format but reading is a lifelong skill necessary in all realms of the real world. Additionally, SSR is proven to increase reading fluency, expand vocabulary and enhance word recognition. Therefore, the goal of SSR is not to bog you down with required reading, but rather promote reading as a habit not a chore! You are encouraged to find books of high interest so that your time spent reading doesn't feel wasted, boring or monotonous.
While there is time provided in class, you are also required to read your SSR books outside of the classroom. This reading will not be assigned but rather assumed since there are SSR assignments due throughout and at the end of every 9 weeks. You will be required to read about 350-400 pages each quarter. Some of you might read 1 really large book while others read 2-3 shorter ones. It is required that you read novels during this time and not magazines, comic books or newspapers but there are several high interest books out there that will keep the pages turning! I am in the process of building a classroom collection that will be available for students to borrow. Books that are not returned MUST BE PAID FOR OR REPLACED so be sure to keep a close eye on the book that you borrow. The plus side of borrowing from the classroom collection is that there are no fines and no return time requirements, basically you can return the book when you finish it!
